Uttarakhand Cabinet Approves Uniform Civil Code: convened under the leadership of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, has given its nod to the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) report during a meeting held at the Chief Minister’s residence. This decision precedes the upcoming Assembly session scheduled from February 5th to 8th. Sources suggest that the Bill is expected to be presented in the Assembly on Tuesday.

The UCC draft, spearheaded by retired Supreme Court judge Ranjana Prakash Desai, was submitted to Chief Minister Dhami on Friday. Subsequently, a cabinet meeting chaired by CM Dhami was convened at the State Secretariat on Saturday to deliberate on the draft report.

CM Dhami expressed the government’s commitment to transforming the draft into legislation, stating, “During today’s cabinet meeting, the UCC report was approved. We are dedicated to progressing towards its enactment.”

The UCC aims to establish uniform civil laws across all communities in the state. The drafting committee, led by Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, included members such as retired Justice Pramod Kohli, social activist Manu Gaur, former Uttarakhand Chief Secretary Shatrughan Singh, and Doon University’s Vice Chancellor, Surekha Dangwal.

Upon implementation, Uttarakhand will become the first Indian state post-independence to embrace the UCC. The drafting committee, granted four extensions in total, with the latest extension granted for 15 days in January this year.

The UCC seeks to provide a legal framework for uniform laws pertaining to marriage, divorce, land, property, and inheritance, irrespective of religious affiliation. Its passage will signify the fulfillment of a significant electoral pledge made by the BJP prior to the 2022 Assembly polls.

Article 44 of the Indian Constitution advocates for the enactment of a Uniform Civil Code throughout India, encompassing laws related to marriage, inheritance, adoption, and other areas.

While the Uniform Civil Code has been a subject of political contention over the years, it gained renewed attention following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s endorsement for its implementation during an address in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, in June last year.
