Three people tragically died after their car went straight into the Anacostia River on Thursday night in southeast D.C.

This incient occured right below the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge.

Witnesses reported seeing the vehicle plunged into the water around 10:30 p.m. in the area below the bridge.

First responders found tire marks near Anacostia Park leading down the steep bank and into the water, and immediately started searching the area.

Divers found a submerged car in the water under the bridge around midnight with one person deceased inside.

Rescue crews also found another adult male and female dead outside the vehicle.

Recovery crews managed to get the car out of the water by early Friday morning, but it's still a mystery as to how the vehicle ended up in the river.

The Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge is located in Washington, D.C. and carries South Capitol Street over the Anacostia River.
