Toronto's Pearson International airport was hit by a heist of nearly C$20m in gold and other valuable items.

Peel Regional Police stated that the theft happened on Monday after containers were offloaded from an aircraft.

The cargo container contained gold and other items of monetary value.

The investigation is ongoing, and the intended destination of the stolen cargo is unknown.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police is investigating the case, and the Greater Toronto Airports Authority declined to comment.

Toronto's airport handles almost half of the country's air cargo.

This is not the first time a gold heist has happened at a Toronto-area airport.

A gold heist worth $215,000 was carried out in 1952 at Malton Airport, the precursor to Pearson.

The theft in 1952 was never solved, and the stolen gold was never found.

Trans-Canada Air Lines, which later became Air Canada, was believed to be the airline hit by the heist on Monday.
